Blaina Gwent Away

We were on the road again this weekend. This time we travelled all the way along the Heads of Valleys road to play Blaina Gwent at Nantyglo RFC. This was a last minute fixture so we travelled light with just 16 kids.

We were expecting an onslaught from the start as there are some decent rugby players from that part of the world. We weren’t disappointed. They had a massive pack and we struggled to contain them early on. We got plenty of ball but just couldn’t seem to break them down.

They carried the ball well and broke through our tackles and were first on the scoreboard. They dominated up front and scored again before the interval and we went into the sheds 12-0 down.

Reg and I had a chat to the boys and reminded them of what we’d been doing in training and told them to make their tackles, keep to their processes and get the ball out wide.

The boys took on the advice and the forwards started to feel their way into it. Max and Aiden were immense carrying the ball and Jackson, Jacob  and Zac were a nuisance on the floor. They won some decent ball for the backs and they managed to dance their way to the first try. The handling in the backs was first class and Reg and I were very impressed.

Dan Pallet had a lovely time at outside half and his kicking was top draw. We managed to score 4 unanswered tries and came away with the spoils at the end.

We are very proud of how the boys stuck at it came back into that game. We look forward to playing Blaina at home in the first round of the cup in November.

See you all in training on Monday.
